With Cleo set to break the cycle of pain, discomfort, and disruption of periods, you’re free to get back to the business of being badass. Here are some expert tips for being an even better you so you can live your best life this decade.
Gratitude has emerged as the key to greatness and the self-care mantra for the 20’s. And while being grateful sounds simple enough – the effects can be monumental. By expressing gratitude daily, you cultivate a positive mindset that retrains your brain to think good thoughts for the future. Invest in a gratitude diary and start the day by writing out three things you are grateful for in your life or about yourself. Then review and add to the list before you go to bed. We promise, even on the crappiest of days, there’s always something to be grateful for. Like, say the miracle of just being alive.
Develop a Performance Mindset
What starts with gratitude swiftly develops into a performance mindset where success is inevitable. All that limits you are your beliefs and reluctance to smash through the status quo. Identify areas of your life where you feel held back (i.e., your career, relationship, friendships, bank account) and think bigger. By applying the 10x rule – imagine something you want and blow it up 10 times bigger – you create a pattern that disrupts self-imposed limits and opens the door to a higher perspective and endless opportunities. Create a big-picture vision for your life by examining your values and asking yourself what it is you want to achieve. Write it all down, set goals, and use this as your internal compass for the future. Your list should include doing something epic and totally out of your comfort zone on a regular basis.
Sober is the new high
Jomo [joy of missing out] is rapidly replacing Fomo [fear of missing out] as more of us hang up our beer goggles in favor of a cleaner existence. If Courtney Love can do it, then there’s hope for the rest of us! If cutting out or cutting back on alcohol is something you crave (especially in the post-party season), then do it! There’s no question that the benefits are plentiful. Like, no more hangovers, a slimmer waistline, increased energy and focus, brighter eyes, a more radiant complexion, deeper sleep, better health long term, more money in the bank — and our personal favorite — the joy of sober sex you can actually remember.
Embrace Plant Power
If you truly want to jump aboard the health and wellness bandwagon for life, consider switching up your diet. Research from Harvard Medical School shows that eating a plant-based or Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers, and depression while increasing mental and physical function and longevity — yep, you’ll live longer. A plant-based vegetarian diet contains all the necessary proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals you need and is high in fiber and phytonutrients. So go crazy tucking into fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean diet is predominantly plant-based, but permission is granted to indulge in fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, yogurt, and the occasional steak. Sign us up.
We’ve all become so programmed to be on 24/7 that we’ve forgotten how to just be, according to experts who state that our brains and biology have become so adapted to high levels of stimulus we need to reset our receptors so they know how to be satiated again. In other words: STOP! Undergo a digital detox, take up meditation, or get off the treadmill and spend a few quiet days doing absolutely nothing to reboot your system for the year ahead. Being in nature has proven to lower stress levels and increase your overall sense of health and wellbeing, so go for a hike (exercise is always the answer). While meditating, even for just a few minutes a day (try an app like Calm or Insight Timer) promotes inner calm, loving-kindness, and renewed focus and clarity.
